I do this work because of the parents and family members suffering deeply from the effects of addiction. Many lack access to evidence based skills and non-judgmental support. I am incredibly grateful to be able to share information with people far and wide about the ways they can support their loved ones while also caring for themselves.
I always walk away from trainings deeply moved and inspired. The moments that stick out the most are when parents come back and share the ways they used the skills learned with their own family. It is even more impactful when they mention noting an immediate difference! It can’t get any better than that.
I would tell them to never give up. This is hard work and there will be times when it feels like your efforts are not working and you want to give up. If you can hold on through those tough moments, amazing things can happen! Even through difficulty, parents should know that they will feel better after handling a situation in a way that allows their child to feel loved – that alone is a tremendous gift.
